On August 21, Mike McFarland, a devoted family man and 24-year employee of Copper Mountain Ski and Ride School, was severely injured in a serious mountain biking accident. Mike is the father of 2 local SMS students, Mason (8th grade) and Finn (6th), both hockey players and all-around athletes and lovely children. Liz is a special education teacher at SMS and has worked 17 years in Summit School District, including 15 at Silverthorne Elementary. Mike suffered broken bones and temporary paralysis from the accident and was airlifted via Flight for Life helicopter to a Denver trauma center for immediate evaluation. The long-term prognosis for Mike is complicated and expensive. In addition to breaking his forearm and wrist in several spots requiring surgery, Mike fractured his spine in 2 places and damaged his spinal cord. This has resulted in Mike being diagnosed with Central Cord Syndrome. The weeks and months ahead will require lots of doctors’ visits and extensive therapy to hopefully ease the pain from this long lasting syndrome and take steps towards regaining a sense of normalcy and active lifestyle that has played such a huge role in Mike’s life and the life of his family. Mike will be out of commission for quite a long time and will likely require nursing and other caregiving support at home as well as missed work, physical therapy costs, and extensive medical bills.
